routine

routine

customary or regular course of procedure; commonplace tasks, chores or duties as must be done regularly or at specified intervals; an unvarying and constantly repeating formula; an individual act, performance or part of a performance, as a song or dance, given regularly by an entertainer (Webster’s New Universal Unabridged Dictionary)

accustomed, established, everyday, familiar, groove, habitual, order, ordinary, pace, regular, usual

I learned the importance of routine from my grandmother. Her day was not complete without warm milk on her morning cereal (heated just right), a pep talk to her plants, an afternoon nap & cup of tea, and bedtime prayers. You could set your clock by Grandma’s daily routines and she continued them almost to the very end. Being routine may seem boring or monotonous, but there’s an ageless quality about ‘being’ and ‘doing’ on a regular basis. There’s a sense of order and familiarity that comes with daily practice. It leaves you feeling less stressed and more content. Especially when your routines are nourishing and nurturing. So, what nurturing acts are part of your routine? How do you habitually nourish yourself?

P. S. If you’d like to see more of my grandmother’s routines, you can read Growing Up Like Grandma and GG’s Favorite Routines (the song her grandchildren wrote and sang at her funeral).
