I love the first roses of spring—so vivid and velvety. The rose has been revered since ancient times for much more than its beauty and scent. Its petals impart a plethora of properties (say that 3 times!) that soothe & cleanse the skin, deodorize & freshen the air, and enhance the flavor of certain foods (rosewater is a common ingredient in Middle Eastern and Indian cuisine, mostly in sweets).
In honor of Mother’s Day, my rejuvenating tip is to give yourself a rosy (aka ageless) complexion. Here’s a recipe from “Secrets of the Spas” for a rose petal facial steam and making rosewater. Rosewater is a natural astringent that helps cool & hydrate your skin. And, some studies have shown that it can even reduce wrinkles.
Rose Petal Facial Steam
This steam is a delightful way to open pores and release toxins. It’s also a great way to repurpose your Mother’s Day bouquet!
1 cup fresh rose petals (chemical free)
1 gallon almost-boiling water
Put fresh rose petals in a large bowl and pour almost-boiling water over them. Place towel over head and lean face over bowl, about 12 inches away, to absorb steam and vapors. Keep breathing in vapors for 15 minutes. Gently pat dry.
Once you’re done with the steam, you can make rosewater. First, strain the steam liquid and save the petals and the water separately. Pour water into a medium saucepan and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until there is approximately one cup of liquid left. Once reduced, pour it over the saved petals and steep for another 20 minutes. Strain the liquid again. Discard petals and pour liquid into a glass bottle and allow to cool. After cleansing, use cotton balls to gently swipe rosewater over skin. (Note: I like to put the rosewater in spray bottle to spritz on my face & neck.)
